Didactylornis was named by Yuan (2008).

It was synonymized subjectively with Sapeornis by Li et al. (2010), Gao et al. (2012).

It was assigned to Sapeornithidae by Yuan (2008); and to Sapeornithiformes by O'Connor and Zelenkov (2013), O'Connor et al. (2014).
