Scalarites was named by Wright and Matsumoto (1954) [Sepkoski's age data: K Turo K Coni].

It was assigned to Diplomoceratidae by Matsumoto (1959); to Diplomoceratinae by Kennedy (1984), Kennedy and Christensen (1991), Kennedy and Christennsen (1993) and Kennedy and Kaplan (1995); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
