Taxonomy
Colinus was named by Goldfuss (1820). It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Eo et al. (2009).

It was assigned to Perdicidae by Lambrecht (1933); to Phasianidae by Wetmore (1962) and Parmalee (1992); and to Odontophoridae by Eo et al. (2009) and Clements et al. (2017).
