Aviculopecten was named by M'Coy (1851) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-u P Dora Sepkoski's reference number: 157,524]. Its type is Aviculopecten planoradiatus.

It was assigned to Bivalvia by Girty (1915); to Aviculopectininae by Vokes (1980); to Pectinacea by Ambler (1992); to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Aviculopectinidae by Newell and Boyd (1995) and Amler (2010).
