Rubeosaurus was named by McDonald and Horner (2010). Its type is Styracosaurus ovatus.
It was assigned to Pachyrhinosaurini by Fiorillo and Tykoski (2012); to Centrosaurinae by McDonald and Horner (2010), McDonald (2011), Farke et al. (2011) and Evans and Ryan (2015); and to Centrosaurini by Ryan et al. (2017).
