Glossites was named by Hall (1885) [Sepkoski's age data: D l C Tour]. It is not extant. Its type is Glossites lingualis.

It was assigned to Grammysiidae by Vokes (1980); to Pholadomyoida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Modiomorphidae by Amler (2010).
