Adelophthalmus was named by Jordan and von Mayer (1854) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame P Leon Sepkoski's reference number: 360]. It is not extant. Its type is Adelophthalmus (Eurypterus) granosus. It is the type genus of Adelophthalmidae.
It was reranked as Eurypterus (Adelophthalmus) by Jordan and Meyer (1854); it was reranked as Eurypterus (Anthraconectes) by Meek and Worthen (1868); it was synonymized subjectively with Lepidoderma by Størmer (1955); it was considered an invalid subgroup of Eurypterus by Kjellesvig-Waering (1958).
