Taxonomy
Eurypterus (Adelophthalmus) was named by Jordan and Meyer (1854) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame P Leon Sepkoski's reference number: 360]. It is not extant. Its type is Adelophthalmus (Eurypterus) granosus. It is the type subgenus of Adelophthalmidae, Adelophthalmoidea.

It was reranked as Adelophthalmus by Sepkoski (2002), Brauckmann et al. (2003), Tetlie and Dunlop (2005), Lamsdell et al. (2013) and Dunlop et al. (2013).

It was assigned to Eurypterus by Jordan and Meyer (1854); to Eurypterida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Adelophthalmidae by Brauckmann et al. (2003), Tetlie and Dunlop (2005), Lamsdell et al. (2013) and Dunlop et al. (2013).
