Mixopterus was named by Ruedemann (1921) [Sepkoski's age data: S Wenl S Prid Sepkoski's reference number: 360]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Mixopteridae.
It was assigned to Eurypterida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Mixopteridae by Størmer (1955), Dunlop et al. (2020).
