Taxonomy
Dolichophonus was named by Petrunkevitch (1949) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ldov-u Sepkoski's reference number: 656,1066]. Its type is Palaeophonus loudonensis. It is the type genus of Dolichophonidae.

It was assigned to Palaeophonidae by Petrunkevitch (1949); to Dolichophonidae by Petrunkevitch (1953) and Kjellesvig-Waering (1986); to Scorpionida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Dolichophoniidae by Dunlop et al. (2013).
