Odontopleura was named by Emmrich (1839) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-u S Ludl-l Sepkoski's reference number: 795]. It is not extant. Its type is Odontopleura ovata. It is the type genus of Odontopleuridae, Odontopleurinae.
It was assigned to Odontopleurinae by Bruton (1967), Ramsköld and Chatterton (1991) and Adrain and Ramskold (1997); and to Odontopleurida by Sepkoski (2002).
