Gog was named by Fortey (1975) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-l O Llvi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 378,795]. Its type is Gog catillus.

It was assigned to Niobinae by Hoel (1999); to Asaphida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Asaphidae by Zhou et al. (1998) and Jell and Adrain (2002).
