Niobe was named by Angelin (1851) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Fran-u O Cara-l Sepkoski's reference number: 81,795]. Its type is Asaphus frontalis.

It was assigned to Niobinae by Neuman and Bruton (1974), Fortey (1975) and Hoel (1999); to Asaphida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Asaphidae by Jell and Adrain (2003).
