Weichselia was named by Stiehler (1857). It is not extant. Its type is Weichselia ludovicae.

It was assigned to Pteridophyta by Knowlton (1919); to Filicales by Kräusel (1939); to Weichseliaceae by Lakhanpal et al. (1976); and to Matoniaceae by Cook and Ross (1996).
