Metacanthina was named by Pillet (1954) [Sepkoski's age data: D Sieg D Emsi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 421,983]. Its type is Cryphaeus barrandei.

It was reranked as Asteropyge (Metacanthina) by Pillet (1953).
