Necrocarcinus was named by Bell (1863) [Sepkoski's age data: ]. Its type is Orithyia labeschii. It is the type genus of Necrocarcinidae, Necrocarcinoidea.
It was assigned to Necrocarcininae by Feldmann et al. (1976); to Calappidae by Rathbun (1926), Rathbun (1935) and Feldmann et al. (1993); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Necrocarcinidae by Schweitzer and Feldmann (2000), Schweitzer and Feldmann (2002), Schweitzer et al. (2010), Karasawa et al. (2014), Karasawa et al. (2014), Schweitzer et al. (2016) and Schweitzer et al. (2018).
It was assigned to Necrocarcininae by Feldmann et al. (1976); to Calappidae by Rathbun (1926), Rathbun (1935) and Feldmann et al.
