Retropluma was named by Gill (1894) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-l R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Retroplumidae, Retroplumoidea.
It was assigned to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Retroplumidae by Collins and Morris (1975), Beschin et al. (1996), Collins et al. (2003), Artal et al. (2006), Beschin et al. (2009), Schweitzer et al. (2010), Hyžný and Muller (2010), Beschin et al. (2012).
