Gastrioceras compressum was named by Hyatt (1891).

It was recombined as Pseudoparalegoceras compressum by McCaleb (1963); it was recombined as Pseudoparalegoceras (Phaneroceras) compressum by Gordon (1964); it was recombined as Phaneroceras compressum by Plummer and Scott (1937) and Nassichuk (1975).
