Taxonomy
Quetzalichthys perrilliatae was named by Alvarado-Ortega and Espinosa-Arrubarrena (2008). Its type specimen is IGM 8592, a skeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Tlayua Formation, which is in an Albian lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal lime mudstone in the Tlayua Formation of Mexico.
