Neonatrix crassa was named by Rage and Holman (1984). Its type specimen is FSL 285 012, a set of vertebrae (a single mid-trunk vertebra), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is La Grive M, which is in a MN 7 + 8 fissure fill /limestone in France.
