Obolus was named by Eichwald (1829) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Atda-u O Cara-u Sepkoski's reference number: 5,11]. Its type is Obolus apollinis.

It was assigned to Obolinae by Bruton and Harper (2000) and Williams et al. (2000); and to Lingulida by Bengtson (1992) and Sepkoski (2002).
