Paterina was named by Beecher (1891) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Tomm-u Cm mMid-u Sepkoski's reference number: 19]. It is the type genus of Paterinidae.

It was reranked as Micromitra (Paterina) by Walcott (1908) and Reed (1917).

It was assigned to Micromitra by Walcott (1908) and Reed (1917); to Paterinidae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Paterinida by Bengtson (1992) and Sepkoski (2002).
