Hondathentes cazador was named by Dumont and Brown (1997) [Holotype: IGM 250440, fragmentary right dentary with p3-m2
Etymology: Named for El Cazador, a mythical hunter of the Grand Tolim region of Colombia]. Its type specimen is IGM 250440, a mandible (fragmentary right dentary with p3-m2), and it is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Hondathentes.
