Calyptolepta was named by Neuman (1976) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-u O Llvi Sepkoski's reference number: 412]. Its type is Calyptolepta diaphragma.

It was assigned to Leptellininae by Neuman (1976); to Grorudiidae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).

Neuman 1976Wide, concavoconvex, parvicostellate shells, the dorsal valve having a chilidium and a bladelike cardinal process, the vent ral valve having an apically perforate pseudodeltidium; platform present on both valves, that of the dorsal va lve having a high median crest, that of the ventral valve having a low ridge between its deeply impressed inner margins.
