Chonetina was named by Krotow (1888) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon Sepkoski's reference number: 538]. It is not extant. Its type is Chonetella artiensis.

It was reranked as Chonetes (Chonetina) by Reed (1944).

It was assigned to Chonetes by Reed (1944); to Anopliinae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
