Leptestia was named by Bekker (1922). Its type is Leptestia musculosa. It is the type genus of Leptestiidae.
It was assigned to Plectambonitidae by Alikhova (1953); to Leptestiidae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
