Idiostrophia was named by Ulrich and Cooper (1936). Its type is Idiostrophia perfecta.

It was assigned to Pentamerida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Camerellinae by Williams et al. (2002), Popov et al. (2005) and Hansen and Holmer (2011).
