Septalaria was named by Leihold (1928) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife-u D Give-l Sepkoski's reference number: 25]. Its type is Terebratula subtetragona. It is the type genus of Septalariidae.
It was synonymized subjectively with Pseudocamarophoria by Grant (1965).
It was assigned to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Septalariidae by Williams et al. (2002).
