Taxonomy
Wellerella was named by Dunbar and Condra (1932) [Sepkoski's age data: C Mosc-l P Djhu Sepkoski's reference number: 1,411]. It is the type genus of Wellerellidae, Wellerellinae.

It was reranked as Pugnax (Wellerella) by Reed (1944).

It was assigned to Pugnax by Reed (1944); to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Wellerellinae by Williams et al. (2002).
