Cyrtia was named by Dalman (1828). Its type is Anomites exporrectus.

It was assigned to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cyrtiinae by Bassett and Cocks (1974), Jin and Chatterton (1997) and Williams et al. (2006).
