Janius was named by Havlicek (1957). Its type is Spirifer nobilis.

It was assigned to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Eospiriferinae by Bassett and Cocks (1974), Jin and Chatterton (1997) and Williams et al. (2006).
