Priapulidae was named by Gosse (1855). It is extant. Its type is Priapulus. It was considered monophyletic by Wills et al. (2012).

It was assigned to Priapulomorpha by Han et al. (2004); and to Priapulida by Conway Morris (1977), Wills et al. (2012).
