Leptaena rugosa was named by Meek (1873).

It was recombined as Plectambonites rugosa by Foerste (1912); it was recombined as Plectambonites rugosus by Foerste (1924); it was recombined as Thaerodonta rugosa by Wang (1949); it was recombined as Sowerbyella rugosus by Caster et al. (1961); it was recombined as Sowerbyella rugosa by Howe (1972) and Howe (1979).
