Mesopalaeaster was named by Schuchert (1914) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-u O Ashg-m Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. Its type is Palaeaster shafferi. It is the type genus of Mesopalaeasterinae, Mesopalaeasteridae.
It was synonymized subjectively with Hudsonaster by Dean Shackleton (2005).
It was assigned to Mesopalaeasterinae by Schuchert (1915), Spencer (1916), Owen (1965) and Spencer and Wright (1966); to Pustulosida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Mesopalaeasteridae by Blake (2018).
