Taxonomy
Tropidaster was named by Forbes (1850) [Sepkoski's age data: J Plie-l J Plie-u Sepkoski's reference number: 934,1066]. It is not extant. Its type is Tropidaster pectinatus. It is the type genus of Tropidasteridae.

It was assigned to Tropidasteridae by Wright (1880) and Spencer and Wright (1966); and to Valvatida by Sepkoski (2002).
