Protaxocrinus was named by Springer (1906) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-m D Gedi]. It is not extant. Its type is Taxocrinus ovalis.
It was assigned to Taxocrinidae by Ausich (1998), Ausich and Copper (2010); and to Taxocrinida by Sepkoski (2002), Wright et al. (2019).
