Taxonomy
Protaxocrinus was named by Springer (1906) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-m D Gedi]. It is not extant. Its type is Taxocrinus ovalis.

It was assigned to Taxocrinidae by Ausich (1998) and Ausich and Copper (2010); and to Taxocrinida by Sepkoski (2002) and Wright et al. (2019).

D. F. Wright et al. 2019Taxocrinid with an elongated crown. Infrabasals 3; CD basal enlarged, elongated; interradial plates present, small, positioned between proximal primibrachials. Radianal positioned directly under C ray radial; anal X resting on the upper right shoulder of CD basal; anal sac tube-like,
comprised of a series of vertically stacked plates, in close affinity with proximal brachials in the C ray. Primibrachials 2; arms branch isotomously several times. Column circular, somewhat wider near the base of the calyx.
