Taxonomy
Plegiocidaris was named by Pomel (1883) [Sepkoski's age data: J Hett-l K Haut Sepkoski's reference number: 577,801]. Its type is Echinus coronatus.

It was assigned to Cidarinae by Fell (1966); to Cidaroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cidaridae by Ragaini (1994) and Smith (2009).
