Taxonomy
Hemicidaris was named by Agassiz (1838) [Sepkoski's age data: J Plie-u K Apti Sepkoski's reference number: 956]. It is the type genus of Hemicidaridae.

It was assigned to Hemicidaridae by Fell and Pawson (1966); and to Hemicidaroida by Sepkoski (2002).
