Scutellina was named by Agassiz (1841) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l T Eo-u Sepkoski's reference number: 942].

It was assigned to Clypeasteroida by Sepkoski (2002) and Smith (2009); and to Fibulariidae by Durham (1955), Durham (1966) and Carrasco and Cardiel-Lalueza (2015).
