Agassizia was named by Valenciennes (1846) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 343]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Schizasteridae by Cooke (1959) and Fischer (1966); and to Spatangoida by Sepkoski (2002).
