Heptranchias was named by Rafinesque (1810) [Sepkoski's age data: T Dani R]. It is extant. Its type is Heptranchias cinereus.

It was assigned to Hexanchiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Hexanchidae by Jordan (1907), Jordan and Gilbert (1919), Jordan (1963), Welton (1974), Long (1992), Long et al. (1993) and Carnevale (2007).
