Heptanema was named by Belloti (1857) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Ladi J Tith-l Sepkoski's reference number: 863,1066]. It is not extant. Its type is Heptanema paradoxum.
It was assigned to Coelacanthidae by Woodward (1891); to Coelocanthiformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Mawsoniidae by Forey (1998), Schultze (2004); and to Actinistia by Renesto and Stockar (2018), Renesto et al. (2021).
