Porolepis was named by Woodward (1891) [Sepkoski's age data: D Sieg-u D Give Sepkoski's reference number: 502,1066]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Porolepidae.
It was assigned to Coelocanthiformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Porolepididae by van der Laan (2019); and to Porolepiformes by Jeffery (2002), Mondéjar‐Fernández et al. (2020).
