Neoprioniodus brevirameus was named by Walliser (1964).
It was synonymized subjectively with Hamarodus europaeus by Stouge and Rasmussen (1996); it was recombined as Hamarodus brevirameus by Dzik (1994) and Fan et al. (2015).
