Acipenser was named by Linnaeus (1758) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Acipenserinae, Acipenserini.
It was assigned to Placoganoidei by Leidy (1873); to Acipenserini by Grande and Bemis (1996); to Acipenseriformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Acipenserinae by Grande and Hilton (2006); and to Acipenseridae by Woodward (1895), Hay (1902), Jordan (1907), Leriche (1942), Estes (1964), Casier (1966), Estes (1969), Estes (1976), Nessov (1997), Weems (1999), Purdy et al.
