Stephanodiscus was named by Ehrenberg (1845). It is extant. Its type is Stephanodiscus niagarae.

It was assigned to Coscinodiscaceae by Lakhanpal et al. (1976); and to Stephanodiscaceae by Glezer and Makarova (1986) and Makarova (1986).
