Dercetis was named by Agassiz (1834) [Sepkoski's age data: K Turo K Camp-u Sepkoski's reference number: 863,915]. It is the type genus of Dercetidae.
It was assigned to Alepisauriformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Dercetidae by Woodward (1901), Woodward (1903), Casier (1965), Goody (1969), Alvarado-Ortega and Díaz-Cruz (2021), Argyriou (2022).
