Parenchodus was named by Raab and Chalifa (1987) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-u Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. Its type is Parenchodus longipterygius.

It was assigned to Enchodontidae by Raab and Chalifa (1987); and to Alepisauriformes by Sepkoski (2002).
