Homorhynchus was named by Van Beneden (1873) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m T Ol-l Sepkoski's reference number: 915].

It was assigned to Acanthomorpha by Sepkoski (2002); and to Palaeorhynchidae by Danil'chenko (1960), Danil'chenko (1980), Schultz (1987), Fierstine (2006), Monsch and Bannikov (2011).
