Tupilakosaurus was named by Nielsen (1954) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Indu-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Tupilakosaurus heilmani.
It was assigned to Brachyopidae by Carroll (1988); to Temnospondyli by Sepkoski (2002); and to Tupilakosauridae by Yates and Warren (2000), Schoch (2013), Schoch and Milner (2014).
