Placochelys was named by Jaekel (1902) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn-l Sepkoski's reference number: 940]. It is the type genus of Placochelydae.
It was synonymized subjectively with Psephoderma by Pinna and Nosotti (1989).
It was assigned to Cyamodontidae by Carroll (1988); to Placochelyidae by Kuhn (1971), Rieppel (2000); to Placochelyida by Rieppel (2001); and to Placodontia by Sepkoski (2002).
